1988 I-MARK (JI) EMISSIONS CAMPAIGN

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

Number 93E881 has been assigned to this campaign. This number will appear on all communications and documentation of any nature dealing with this campaign.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1988 I-Mark (JT) Federal non-turbocharged models.

SERVICE INFORMATION

Affected vehicles are out of compliance with Federal emission standards. As a result they may fail state mandated emissions tests.

To correct this condition, on vehicles equipped with manual transmission, the Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM computer chip) in the ECM must be replaced. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, a spark delay valve must be replaced. Use only parts listed in "Parts Information" section of this Campaign Bulletin.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners of affected vehicles have been notified by letter (copy enclosed) from American Isuzu Motors Inc. Each Isuzu dealer (except Calif.) will be supplied a copy of the AIMI Campaign Report (AWS 123-1A) listing affected vehicles assigned to that dealership. If none of the affected vehicles are assigned to your dealership, no Report will be sent. The Report contains VIN and detailed owner information obtained from state motor vehicle registration records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, dealers are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign.

PARTS INFORMATION

The following parts have been shipped automatically to every dealership, except California dealers:

Part No. Description Quantity

8-16190-397-0 PROM (M/7 model) 2

a. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

b. Remove the passenger's side kick panel.

c. Remove the ECM.

d. Following the instructions packed with the new PROM, remove the old PROM from the ECM and install the new PROM in its place.

e. Reinstall and connect the ECM and kick panel.

f. Reconnect the battery.

2. On automatic transmission models-only, replace the spark delay valve (Figure 1) between the air induction valve and vacuum switching valve, with the red plastic end facing toward the vacuum switching valve.

3. All affected vehicles: Affix a campaign label to the inside of the driver's door. Using a ballpoint pen, fill in label with Campaign Number 93E881 and your Isuzu dealer code.

DEALER RESPONSIBILITY

Isuzu dealers are responsible for repairing any affected vehicle at no charge to owners, regardless of date of purchase, mileage or selling dealer.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is in a dealer's vehicle inventory, or arrives at a dealership for service, the dealer must take the necessary steps to ensure this campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

FLAT RATE MANUAL UPDATE INFORMATION

Use Trouble Code 07 for all campaign operations.

Dear Isuzu I-Mark Owner:

The Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has determined that your vehicle may be emitting pollutants in excess of the Federal emission standards as defined in 40 CFR Part 86. These standards as defined in 40 CFR Part 86 were established to protect the public health or welfare from the dangers of air pollution.

WHAT IS THE RECALL FOR?

The amount of carbon monoxide emission will be reduced by a modification to the emission control system. If your vehicle is equipped with manual transmission, a PROM (computer memory chip) will be replaced in the electronic control module (ECM). If your vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission, a spark delay valve will be replaced.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Please make an appointment with your authorized Isuzu Dealer, who will make the emission system modification at no charge. The labor time necessary to perform this service correction is approximately one hour. Please ask your Isuzu Dealer if you wish to know how much additional time will be needed to schedule and process your vehicle. Please refer to Campaign Bulletin Number SB93-03-002 when you contact your Dealer.

In order to ensure your full protection under the emission warranty made applicable to your vehicle by Federal law, and your right to participate in future recalls, it is recommended that you have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Failure to do so could legally be determined to be a lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle, or could cause your vehicle to fail an emissions test required by State or local law. Isuzu will repair all vehicles, regardless of maintenance or use, except those that have emission control sub-systems modified or disabled. In those cases, an owner will be asked if the system should be restored at their expense.

You may contact the appropriate Isuzu Regional Office listed in the back of your Owner's Manual, or the National Customer Relations Office, American Isuzu Motors Inc., P.O. Box 2480, City of Industry, CA 91746 (phone 800-255-6727), if the Dealer does not schedule a service date within a reasonable time.

If your Isuzu Dealer and the Customer Relations office are unable to remedy this condition within a reasonable time, you may wish to advise the Environmental Protection Agency at the following address: Director, Manufacturer's Operations Division (6405J), United States Environmental Protection Agency, 401 M Street SW, Washington, DC 20460.

We are indeed sorry for any inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation in having this correction to your Isuzu vehicle completed.

IMPORTANT:
If you have sold your Isuzu vehicle, please enter the owner's name and address, if known, on the enclosed "Change of Information" postcard and drop it in the mail. Postage has already been paid. We will contact the new owner.
