Differential Carrier: Service and Repair
Removal
1. Remove wheels and brake drums.
2. Disconnect brake pipes at both rear wheel cylinders. Cover ends of brake pipes to prevent foreign material into system.
3. Disconnect emergency brake cable brackets at rear spring.
4. Remove bolts from each end flange.
5. Disengage axle shafts from carrier assembly and partially withdraw shafts from axle tube. It is not necessary to remove axle shaft.
6. Disconnect the propeller shaft at the companion flange and remove propeller shaft.

7. Remove the nuts mounting the differential carrier assembly to the axle housing and remove the carrier, Fig. 3.
Installation
1. Clean the faces of the rear axle case and differential carrier and install gasket.
2. Mount the carrier assembly to the rear axle case and torque nuts to 35 ft. lbs.
3. Install the axle shaft assemblies.
4. Install propeller shaft and torque companion flange bolts to 18 ft. lbs.
5. Fill the rear axle case with hypoid gear lubricant, slightly below the filler hole.
