1996 130 MIL "ON" DUE TO WATER ENTERING THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSION
(EVAP) CANISTER
APPLIED VEHICLE:
1996 I30 (CA32)
SERVICE INFORMATION
If a 1996 I30 has a malfunction indicator light (MIL) ON and one or more of the following diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) is stored in self diagnosis, water may be entering the EVAP system canister.
^ P0440 (EVAP Small Leak),
^ P0443 (EVAP Purge Control Valve & Solenoid Valve)
^ P0446 (EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve) or
^ P1445 (EVAP Canister Purge Volume Control Valve).
An EVAP canister vent (water-separating) system has been developed to prevent this incident. Perform the following procedure to diagnose and repair the vehicle, if this incident should occur.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Connect CONSULT and access "SELF DIAG RESULTS" (under "ENGINE"). Touch "PRINT"; touch "FF DATA"; then touch "PRINT".
A. If the self diagnosis results and the freeze frame data indicate only DTC P1445, perform COMPONENT INSPECTION of EVAP canister purge volume control valve (refer to page EC-310 of the service manual). Then proceed to step 1 of Removal.
B. If the self diagnosis results and freeze frame data indicate one or more of the DTCs listed above, proceed to step 1 of Removal.
C. If the stored DTC(s) is other than those listed above, refer to the appropriate page in the EC section of the service manual for assistance in repairing the vehicle.
Parts Removal
1. Locate the EVAP canister behind the rear left tire on the underside of the vehicle (see Figure 1).
2. Remove the EVAP canister from the vehicle with the EVAP vent control valve attached. The control valve is bolted to the front of the canister with two 10 mm head bolts. Save all bolts for re-installation.
EVAP Vent Control Valve Inspection
1. Check the EVAP vent control valve.
NOTE:
Air should pass through the valve when voltage is not applied to the valve.
A. Apply battery voltage to the valve and make sure the passage closes (see Figure 2).
B. Disconnect the battery voltage and make sure the valve opens again (does not stick closed).
If the valve fails any of these tests, install one of the EVAP vent control valves listed below. Use a new O-ring (P/N 16618-40U00) when installing the Type-A valve.
^ Type-A* EVAP vent control valve without integral O-ring P/N 14935-54U06 (to be used with Type-A EVAP canister P/N 14950-56U17)
^ Type-B* EVAP vent control valve with integral O-ring P/N 14935-54U04 (to be used with Type-B EVAP canister P/N 14950-56U18)
* Refer to ITB98-012a for detail information about the differences between Type-A and Type-B EVAP vent control valves and canisters.
EVAP Canister Inspection
1. Check if liquid drains from the canister and weigh the canister with the EVAP vent control valve attached.
A. If liquid drains from the canister or if the weight is over 4 lbs. (1.8 kg), install one of the EVAP canisters listed below. Use a new O-ring (P/N 16618-40U00) when replacing the Type-A canister.
^ Type-A* EVAP canister P/N 14950-56U17 (to be used with Type-A vent control valve P/N 14935-54U06)
^ Type-B* EVAP canister P/N 14950-56U18 (to be used with Type-B vent control valve P/N 14935-54U04)
* Refer to 1TB98-012a for detail information about the differences between Type-A and Type-B EVAP canisters and vent control valves.
B. If liquid does not drain from the canister and the weight is below 4 lbs. (1.8 kg), it is not necessary to replace the canister.
Water Separator Kit Installation
1. Remove and discard the canister bracket (bolted to the vehicle), breather valve and hose. Save the bracket bolts for re-installation.
2. Use the alignment marks to assemble the new EVAP canister vent hoses, water separator and vent hose connector to the new EVAP canister bracket as shown (see Figure 3).
3. Use the existing bolts and install the canister bracket on the vehicle. Insert the vent hose connector into the existing hole in the vehicle rear panel (near the rear bumper).
4. Use the existing bolts and a new O-ring and install the EVAP canister and vent control valve into the new canister bracket. If installing a Type-A canister, remember to install a new O-ring between the canister and the valve.
5. Connect the EVAP hoses to the canister in the same position as they were removed, noting the alignment marks.
6. Re-install all electrical connectors.
