RADIO HEAD UNIT "POPPING NOISE"

APPLIED MODELS:
1994 Q45 (G50)

APPLIED SERIAL NUMBERS/PRODUCTION DATE: 250227-253488/April 7, 1993

INCIDENT SUMMARY:

During sub-assembly of the radio printed circuit board, a production error caused the diversity antenna circuit to perform improperly, resulting in "popping" noises as the FM radio switches between the glass and mast antennas. The problem was corrected by the Factory from April 7, 1993 production.

SERVICE INFORMATION:

The repair entails removal and replacement of the audio head unit. The radio's vendor, Clarion, will supply new replacement units upon Dealer order to the Clarion Exchange Hotline (see PARTS INFORMATION). The unit exchange (repair) time is 0.5 hours. Vehicles received by Dealers since April 12, 1993, which have a green dot on the volume control (and a black stripe on the volume control shaft) require no replacement as these units have been corrected at the VPC.

CORRECTION OF UNSOLD DEALER INVENTORY:

Repair priority is being given to unsold Dealer inventory and Dealer demonstrator vehicles. Dealers should order replacement audio head units using normal audio unit exchange procedures. Customer service requests may also be supported by the same process. Sufficient replacement audio units are available to take care of Dealer inventory, only.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

I. REMOVAL - Radio head unit

1. A/T Finisher (Wood) - Remove the finisher by lifting at the inner edge of the rear section of the trim panel with a trim removal tool (Snap-On P/N A177A or equivalent).

NOTE:
Protect the wood finisher by placing a clean soft terry cloth on top of the shift selector.

Do not lift at the front section (towards dash) of the trim panel. This may break the mounting tabs at this location. Disconnect the two (2) window switch connectors and place trim panel on front passenger side floor carpet with finished wood surface faced up. (Figure 1)

2. Ash Tray - Remove the four (4) screws securing the center console finisher to the transmission tunnel. Remove two (2) screws holding the ash tray. Remove the "L" shaped bracket and open the ash tray. (Figure 2) Rotate the ash tray to clear the two alignment tabs at the front edge of the ash tray and remove. Disconnect the three (3) connectors and place the ash tray on front passenger side floor carpet with finished wood surface faced up.

3. Center Console Finisher - Position steering column to maximum down position. Carefully remove the finisher by hand. Use extra caution when removing the wrap-around dash console finisher near the steering column since the metal clip on the mounting tab can be easily broken. Disconnect the rear window defogger connector.

4. Radio Head Unit / Climate Control Unit - Cover the shift selector assembly with clean soft terry cloths to protect possible scratching or damage when removing the radio head unit. Remove the four (4) screws holding the radio head unit to the dash and carefully remove the head unit. Disconnect the connectors behind the unit and remove from the vehicle.

5. Radio Head Unit Replacement - Place the Radio Head Unit/Climate Control Unit Assembly on a clean work bench area; separate the radio head unit from the climate control unit. The climate control head unit is connected to the radio head unit by two mounting brackets which are held with eight (8) M5x5 machine screws. To prevent damage to the screw heads, use a Phillips screw driver with a # 2 bit to carefully remove these screws.

There are also four (4) black screws holding the side support brackets to the climate control unit. It is only necessary to loosen two (2) of these screws on one (1) side of the bracket to allow clearance for radio removal. (Figure 3)

III. REINSTALLATION - Radio Head Unit

1. Reassemble the Radio Head Unit and Climate Control Unit in reverse order. Reattach all electrical connections. Test and verify the operation of the following to confirm proper electrical connections:

^ Radio operation
^ Climate control
^ Power windows
^ Ashtray light / Cigarette lighter
^ All center console lights
^ Rear window defogger
^ Steering wheel tilt

In general, reinstall the radio and dash trim pieces in reverse order of disassembly, noting the following precautions:

^ Center Console Finisher - As mentioned previously, the mounting tab holding the lid to the dash near the steering column can easily be broken. Carefully guide the metal clip (see note below) which is attached to the mounting tab to its mounting location on the dash. If it becomes too difficult to reinstall the lid without damage to lid or dash then remove the steering column covers to gain additional clearance for the finisher.

NOTE:
If the metal clip breaks, a replacement clip can be obtained by ordering part number 68192-60U05.

^ A/T Finisher (Wood) - Align the trim panel plastic tabs (2) into the sheet metal bracket located in front of the transmission selector, press down to snap finisher in place.
