Starter Relay - Replacement

STARTER RELAY REPLACEMENT

APPLIED MODEL:
1994 Q45 (G50)

SERVICE INFORMATION:

New electrical harness connectors for the Starter Relay, P/N 25230-89981, are available which should be installed when the relay is replaced. These connectors optimize the service life of the Starter Relay.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. Disconnect the negative (-) cable from the battery.

2. Remove the two (2) screws securing the Windshield Wiper Amplifier. Disconnect the two (2) harness connectors and set the Amplifier to one side.





3. Disconnect the two (2) wire harness connectors at the Starter Relay. Discard the old Starter Relay. (Figure 1)

4. For the "W" Type Connector [smaller diameter wires]:





a. Un-clip the brown pin retainer at the harness-side of the connector housing. Insert Kent-Moore "Pin Extraction Tool" P/N J38751-304 [NOTE: This tool is included in the Kent-Moore Terminal Kit, P/N J38751] from the terminal side and gently wedge the tool between the terminal and the connector housing (Figure 2). When the retaining clip inside the connector housing is released, the terminal/wire assembly can be backed out.

TO PREVENT TERMINAL DAMAGE OR WIRE BREAKAGE, USE CAUTION WHEN RE-MOVING THE TERMINAL.

5. For the "X" Type Connector [larger diameter wires]:





Un-clip the brown pin retainer at the harness-side of the connector housing by gently prying with a 3/16" flat tip screwdriver. Insert Kent-Moore "Pin Extraction Tool" P/N J38751-302 from the terminal side and gently wedge the tool between the terminal and the connector housing (Figure 3). When the retaining clip inside the connector housing is released, the terminal/wire assembly can be backed out.

TO PREVENT TERMINAL DAMAGE OR WIRE BREAKAGE, USE CAUTION WHEN REMOVING THE TERMINAL.

6. Carefully slide the four (4) terminal/wire assemblies into the new connector housings until they "click" into place. Install both of the brown pin retainers before installing the new relay.

7. Reinstall Windshield Wiper Amplifier.

8. Reconnect the negative (-) terminal of the battery.

9. Perform functional check of starter system to confirm completeness of repairs.
