J30 REAR BRAKE JUDDER

APPLIED MODEL:
1993 J30(JY32)

APPLIED VIN:
JNKAY21D(**)M017304

APPLIED DATE:
September 23, 1992

SERVICE INFORMATION:

Some J30 owners may complain of brake pedal pulsation and/or vibration during braking (brake judder) after vehicles accumulate mileage. To reduce the tendency for brake judder to develop, the replacement rear brake pad material has been changed. Vehicles built after the Applied VIN and Applied Date, listed above, were produced with the new rear brake pad material.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. Brake judder is directly related to rotor runout and thickness variation. Insure that the rear rotors meet the following inspection criteria [Ref. pages BR19-26 of the J30 Service Manual]:

A. Rotor Runout-Maximum runout of 0.15 mm(0.0059 in). Index the rotor to minimize rotor runout.

B. Rotor Thickness-Maximum thickness variation of 0.02 mm (0.0008 in), measured at eight (8) even locations. Minimum allowable thickness of 14.00 mm (0.551 in).

C. Machine the rear rotor, using the off-car brake lathe, if any of the above do not meet specifications. OR

D. Replace the rotor, if machining and/or wear exceeds the minimum allowable thickness.
