SERVICE INFORMATION
If the A/C evaporator is leaking on a 1993 - 96 J30, it may be due to a galvanic reaction caused by copper particles settling on the aluminum core material. These copper particles originate from the blower motor.
It the A/C evaporator is diagnosed and confirmed to have a refrigerant leak, replace the blower motor and fan assembly in addition to the A/C evaporator. A countermeasure blower motor is available to prevent future incidents of this type. Perform the following procedure to ensure a proper repair.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Perform an A/C leak test to determine the location of the leak.
A. If the leak is confirmed at a location other than the evaporator, repair the leaking component as necessary.
B. If the leak is confirmed at the evaporator, proceed to Step 2.
2. Discharge the A/C system by recovering the refrigerant using approved recovery equipment.
3. Remove the lower instrument cover and glove box assembly from the passenger side as shown in Figure 1.
4. Remove the A/C evaporator assembly as shown in Figure 2.
5. Remove the lower cover of the blower case assembly. For ease of removal, dismount the ECM (do not disconnect the harness) and related mounting hardware.
6. Replace the blower motor and fan assembly using countermeasure PIN 27220-10Y60. Ensure all debris is removed from the inside of the blower case.
7. Reinstall the lower cover of the blower case assembly.
8. Replace the evaporator. Ensure that all debris is removed from the evaporator case.
9. Reinstall the evaporator.
10. Reinstall the glove box assembly and lower instrument cover.
11. Evacuate and recharge the NC system to 1.54 - 1.76 lb. (0.70 - 0.80 Kg).
12. Perform an NC performance test to ensure proper operation.
