Removal & Installation
Fig. 15 Steering gear assembly removal:
The rotation of the ABS spiral cable is limited. If the steering gear is to be removed, ensure that the front wheels are pointed straight ahead. When removing the steering gear do not rotate the steering column.
1. Detach tie-rod outer sockets from knuckle arms, Fig. 15, with ball joint puller tool No. HT72520000, or equivalent.
2. Install pipe connector. Torque low pressure side should to 27-30 ft. lbs., high pressure side to 11-18 ft. lbs.
3. Tighten high and low side pressure connectors to specifications. Note that excessive tightening could damage threads or connector O-ring. The O-ring in low pressure side is larger than that in high pressure side connector; ensure to install proper O-ring.
4. Initially, torque nut on tie-rod outer socket and knuckle arm to 22-29 ft. lbs., then tighten further to align nut groove with first pin hole so that cotter pin can be installed. Torque should not exceed 36 ft. lbs.
5. Before removing lower joint from gear, set gear in neutral (wheels straight ahead). After removing lower joint, put matchmarks on pinion shaft and pinion housing to record neutral position of gear.
6. To install, set left and right dust boots to equal deflection, then attach lower joint by aligning match marks of pinion shaft and pinion housing.
