Removal & Installation

1. Disable airbag, refer to Restraint Systems/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and Repair. Do not rotate steering column with steering gear removed.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect outer tie rods from steering knuckle arms.
3. Remove steering lines from gear, then place wheels in straight ahead position and remove lower universal joint from gear.
4. Scribe a mark on pinion shaft and pinion housing to note straight ahead position of gear.
5. Remove gear mounting bolts, then remove gear.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque to specifications.
b. Do not overtighten high and low pressure lines.
c. Ensure proper size O-ring is used in each pressure line.
d. Line up marks made on pinion housing and pinion shaft.
e. Bleed hydraulic steering system.
