Before attempting servicing the SRS system, turn ignition switch Off, then disconnect battery ground cable and wait at least 10 minutes after disconnecting the cable prior to performing any service. Special bolts are coated with a bonding agent. Discard old bolts after removal, then replace with new ones.

REMOVAL

1. Remove lower lid from steering wheel, then disconnect airbag module electrical connector, Fig. 9.
2. Remove side lid.
3. Using Torx bit T50H, remove side lid and left and right special bolts.
4. To remove airbag module, proceed as follows:
a. Always place airbag module with pad facing upward. Do not attempt to disassemble airbag module. Special bolts are coated with a bonding agent, discard after removal and replace.
b. Do not drop or impact airbag module. If any portion is deformed or cracked, replace module.
c. Do not expose airbag module to temperatures exceeding 212°F.
d. Do not allow grease, oil or water to come in contact with airbag module.
5. Place steering wheel in neutral position, then disconnect horn electrical connector and remove nuts.
6. Using steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel. Ensure not to overtighten puller bolt on steering wheel.
7. Attach spiral cable to stopper, then remove steering column cover.
8. Disconnect electrical connector, then remove attaching screws and spiral cable.

INSTALLATION

1. Connect spiral cable electrical connector, then install steering column cover.
2. Remove stopper by pulling two pin guides. Alignment of spiral cable with neutral position. If stopper is not used, align spiral cable with neutral position as follows:
a. Turn spiral cable clockwise until it catches stopper.
b. Back off spiral cable approximately two turns until yellow alignment mark appears on left gear, Fig. 10.
c. Align arrow mark cable with this yellow mark.

3. Install steering wheel setting spiral cable pin guides, then pull spiral cable through.
4. Connect horn electrical connector, then engage spiral cable with pawls in steering wheel and tighten nuts.
5. Position airbag module and tighten with special bolts.
6. Connect airbag module electrical connector, then install all lids.
7. Conduct self-diagnosis to ensure SRS operates properly.
