DESCRIPTION:

Some 2006 MY Sonata vehicles with 2.4L engines may have insufficient adhesive application to the headliner rear mounting plates.

This bulletin will describe the procedure on how to apply adhesive to the headliner rear mounting plates.

VEHICLES AFFECTED:

^ Model: 2006 Sonata vehicles with 2.4L engines

^ Affected production date range: Produced from April 12, 2005 to May 25, 2005

PART REQUIRED:

^ Adhesive must be ordered through Grainger at www.grainger.com (keyword 5E125)

^ To order by phone, call 1-800-323-0620 (Reference Item # 5E125)

^ Adhesive should be ordered for next day delivery

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

NOTE:
Safety glasses are recommended while performing the service procedure.

NOTE:
Make sure hands are clean to prevent soiling the headliner.

1. Move the front seats to the forwardmost positions.

2. Fold down the rear seat backs.

3. Insert fingers in the opening between the headliner rear end and roof panel and hold the clip plate and headliner at the same time.

4. Carefully lower the headliner gradually, holding the clip plate and headliner to prevent wrinkling the headliner. Unfasten the headliner rear mounting clips (3 points) from the roof in sequence of center, left and right.

CAUTION:
Make sure to follow the removal sequence as noted above.

5. Lower the headliner rear portion. The distance between the center clip and the roof panel should not exceed 6 inches (15 cm).

CAUTION:
If the headliner is lowered quickly with substantial force, it may cause permanent wrinkles in the headliner surface.

6. After the headliner is lowered, if the three clip plates are attached to the headliner, skip to Step 7. If the clip plate(s) remain attached to the roof panel (separated from the headliner), perform the following procedure:

A. Carefully remove the clip plate(s) from the roof panel.

B. Apply adhesive to the clip plate as shown in the illustration.

C. Reinstall the clip plate(s) onto the headliner as noted by the outline in the headliner.

D. Wait for at least 10 minutes for the adhesive to cure.

E. Continue to Step # 7.

7. Center Clip Plate: Apply adhesive along the 3 sides of the seam line between the center clip plate and the backside of the headliner.

CAUTION:

^ Use care not to allow adhesive to contaminate other parts of the vehicle.

^ Be sure to cap the adhesive right after application.

8. Left Clip Plate: Apply adhesive along the left clip plate and the back side of the headliner as noted in the illustration.

9. Right Clip Plate: Apply adhesive along the right clip plate and the back side of the headliner as noted in the illustration.

10. After all the adhesive is applied, carefully reattach the headliner to the roof panel. Gently push on the headliner [approximately 11 lb force (5kg.f)] at the mounting clip locations for at least three times to fully secure it to the roof panel. Hold in position for 1 minute to set adhesive.

11. Move the seat backs and front seats to the original positions.

CAUTION:

^ It is recommended that the vehicle must not be driven within 30 minutes after applying the adhesive.

^ If the vehicle must be driven, avoid driving on irregular roads.
