Disassembly and Assembly
FRONT DRIVESHAFT (T.J.-B.J. TYPE)COMPONENTS
DISASSEMBLY
NOTE:
^ Do not disassemble the birfield joint assembly.
^ The driveshaft joint uses special grease. Do not substitute with another type of grease. The boot band should be replaced with a new one.
1. Loosen the tripod joint boot bands and pull the tripod joint boot from the tripod joint case.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the boot.
2. Separate the tripod joint boot from the tripod joint case.
3. Remove the snap ring and spider assembly from the driveshaft.
4. Clean the spider assembly.
5. Remove the birfield joint boot bands and pull out the birfield joint boot.
NOTE: If the boot is to be reused, wrap tape around the driveshaft splines to protect the boot.
6. Remove the dust cover from the birfield joint assembly using the special tool(O9495-33000) or a proper one.
INSPECTION
1. Check the driveshaft splice part for wear or damage.
2. Check for entry of water or foreign materials into birfield joint
3. Check the spider assembly for roller rotation, wear or corrosion.
4. Check the groove inside tripod joint case for wear or corrosion.
5. Check the dynamic damper for damage or cracking.
REASSEMBLY
NOTE: Clean the disassembled parts with solvent, and dry them thoroughly with compressed air. Do not wash the rubber parts with solvent.
1. Wrap the spline (tripod joint side) with vinyl tape to prevent damage to the dynamic damper and boots.
2. Insert the driveshaft in the dynamic damper and boots.
3. Install the tripod joint boot to the driveshaft, then remove the vinyl type. Be careful not to damage the boot.
4. Install the spider assembly.
5. Fit the snap ring into the driveshaft groove. Always rotate the snap ring in its groove to make sure it is fully seated.
6. Pack the tripod joint with the grease.
7. Fit the tripod joint onto the driveshaft, and hold the driveshaft so the tripod joint points up to prevent it from falling off.
8. Add the specified grease to the birfield joint as much as wiped away at the time of inspection.
9. Install the birfield joint boot.
10. Tighten the birfield joint boot bands.
11. To control the air in the tripod joint boot, keep the specified distance between the boots when they are tightened.
12. Tighten the tripod joint boot bands.
NOTE: Bending point of the big tripod joint band sets to center of thin range of a tripod joint boot.
13. To install the dynamic damper, keep the birfield joint and shaft in a straight line, secure the dynamic damper in the direction illustrated below and install the dynamic damper bands.
Standard Value (A): 325 ± 2mm (12.8 ± 0.1 inch)
NOTE: Do not apply grease to rubbers of dynamic dampers.
14. Installing the tone wheel and the dust cover to the birfield joint assembly, use the Special Tool(09517-21200). Pay attention to the specification below. (Press-in the dust cover after the tone wheel)
