TIBURON A/C SWITCH STICKING

DESCRIPTION:

Some Tiburon A/C switch buttons may not stay engaged afier being depressed under certain temperature conditions (extreme hot or cold). The switch may bind slightly against the cluster facia panel and may need to be shimmed to provide adequate clearance. Simple replacement of the switch may result in a repeat repair as the new switch could bind as well.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. Verify that the A/C switch does not stay engaged when depressed.





2. Record the customer's radio stations and disconnect the negative battery cable.





3. Remove the shift lever upper cover.





4. Remove the center facia panel and disconnect the cigarette lighter connector.

5. Remove the lower center facia tray (2 screws). Be careful not to drop the screws into the console area.

6. Remove the four radio mounting screws from the mounting bracket.

7. Pull out the radio from the center facia panel.

NOTE
It is not necessary to completely remove the radio.





8. With a hook awl, pull the switch locking mechanism away from the switch just enough to clear the two lock tabs. Use the other hand to press the A/C switch back through the instrument panel opening.

9. Push the switch through the cluster facia panel and disconnect the wire.

10. Check if the binding condition is within the switch itself by cycling the switch in your hand.

A. If the switch binds internally, replace the switch.

B. If the binding is not in the switch, continue to the next step.

11. Cut a shim about 32 mm (1.1 inch) long from a tie wrap (part number 17993-13000).

12. Place a small spot of RTV silicone sealer onto the shim to hold it to the switch.





13. Place the shim on top of the switch and reinstall the switch.

NOTE
If placing the shim on top of the switch does not correct condition, a shim may have to be placed on the bottom of the switch.

NOTE
A thicker or thinner shim may be required in some cases.

14. Reassemble radio and facia panel in reverse order of removal.

15. Verify that the A/C switch does not bind.

16. Reconnect the negative battery cable and reset the customer's radio stations and clock.

17. Verify all components (A/C, cigarette lighter, radio, etc.) function properly.
