Removal With Conventional Power Steering






1. Remove the air intake hose assembly.





2. Detach the power steering pressure hose mounting clamp and the return tube mounting clamp.
3. Drain power steering fluid.





4. Disconnect the pressure tube and the return tube fittings from the gear box.





5. Disconnect the shaft assembly from the gear box inside the driver's seat compartment.
6. Remove the strap and push out the dust cover and remove the dust cover mounting plate.
7. Lift up the vehicle.
8. Remove front tires.





9. After removing split pin, disconnect the tie rod from the knuckle by using the Special Service Tool (SST) (09568-31000).





10. Remove the stabilizer bar (RH side) mounting bracket.





11. Remove the front muffler assembly.





12. Remove the power steering gear box mounting clamps and the clamp holding both of the pressure tube and the return tube.





NOTE: When removing the gear box, pull it out carefully and slowly so as not to cause damage to the boots.

13. Pull the power steering gear box assembly toward the right side of the vehicle.

NOTE: after removing the power steering gear box assembly, check the Tie Rod swing resistence by following the procedures listed below:
a. Give 10 hard swings to the tie rod.
b. Measure the tie rod swing resistance with a spring scale.The swing resistance standard value should measure 8-22 N (1.9-4.6 lbs.)[2-5 Nm (17-43 inch lbs.)].
c. If the measured value exceeds the standard value, replace the tie rod assembly.
d. Even if the measured value is below the standard value, a tie rod that swings smoothly without excessive play may be used. If the measured value is below 4.3 N (0.9 lbs.) [100 Nm (8.7 inch lbs.)], replace the tie rod.

14. Inspect the bellows for damage or deterioration.
15. Make sure the bellows are secured in the correct position.
16. If the bellows are defective, replace them.
