Valve Spring: Service and Repair






REMOVAL






1. Remove the cylinder head and camshaft.
2. Using the special tool, valve spring compressor tool No. 09222-28000 and valve spring compressor holder tool No. 09222-29000, or equivalent, remove the retainer locks.
3. Next remove the spring retainer, valve spring and valve.

NOTE: Keep these parts in order so they can be reinstalled in their original positions.






2. Remove the valve stem seals with pliers, and discard.

NOTE: Do not reuse the valve stem seals.

4. Remove the valve spring seat.

INSTALLATION

NOTE:
- Clean each part before assembly.
- Apply engine oil to sliding and rotating parts.

1. After installing the spring seat, fit the stem seal onto the valve guide.






2. Fit valve stem oil seal installer tool No. 09222-22000, or equivalent, to the seal then drive seal into position by lightly tapping the installer tool as shown in the illustration.

CAUTION:
- The seal is installed in the specified position by means of the special tool.
- Incorrect installation of the seal will adversely affect the lip I.D. and eccentricity, resulting in oil leaking down the valve guides.
- Therefore, when installing, be careful not to twist the seal. Do not reuse old stem seals.

3. Apply engine oil to each valve stem.
4. Insert the valves into the valve guides.

NOTE:
- Avoid using force when inserting the valve into the seal.
- After insertion, check to see if the valve moves smoothly.






5. Install springs and spring retainers.

NOTE: Valve springs should be installed with the enamel coated side toward the valve spring retainer as shown in the illustration.

6. Using the valve spring compressor tool,compress the spring.

NOTE: Be careful that the valve stem seal is not distorted by the bottom of the retainer.

7. Install the retainer locks.

NOTE: After installation of the valves, make certain that the retainer locks are properly installed.

8. Install the cylinder head and camshaft.
