A/T - 2nd to 3rd Gear Shift Flare
Group: TRANSAXLENumber: 97-40-010
Date: APRIL, 1997
Model: 1997 2.0L TIBURON
Subject:
1997 2.0L TIBURON AUTOMATIC
TRANSAXLE 2-3 SHIFT FLARE
DESCRIPTION:
Some Tiburons equipped with 2.0L engines and automatic transaxles may have a slight shift "flare" during the upshift from 2nd to 3rd gear (engine speed increases slightly during the 2-3 shift). This condition occurs at light throttle angles (15%-20% TPS) when the automatic transaxle fluid (ATF) is cold (below 60°C, 140°F).
A modified transaxle control module (TCM) was installed on production vehicles beginning with March 11, 1997 production. The modified TCM has a revised pressure control solenoid valve duty during the shift to reduce the shift flare when the ATF is below 60°C (140°F).
If a customer experiences this condition on a vehicle produced prior to the production change (March 11, 1997), test drive the vehicle to verify the condition. Confirm that the ATF level is at the "FULL" mark when the ATF is at normal operating temperature (70-80°C, 158-176 °F). If no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) or other driveability symptoms are found, install the modified TCM.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
1. Locate the TCM under the dash on the left side of the brake pedal.
2. Remove two (2) 10 mm nuts that hold the black relay to the TCM.
3. Remove three (3) 12 mm bolts that secure the TCM to the body.
4. Disconnect the two connectors to the TCM.
5. Reinstall the new TCM in reverse order of removal.
