SUBJECT
SCOUPE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY WIRING POSITION MODIFICATION

DESCRIPTION

This Technical Service Bulletin describes the procedure for the inspection, repair and if necessary, replacement of the ignition coil assembly on 1993 Scoupes.

COIL LOCATION

BEFORE AND AFTER MODIFICATION

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect all electrical leads from the coil.

- Secondary coil lead (big black wire)

- Primary coil leads (2 wire connector)

- Ignition condenser lead (single small black wire connector)

2. Remove the two 12mm hex head bolts that attach the coil assembly bracket to the intake manifold and remove the coil assembly.

3. Remove the screw that attaches the primary' ignition coil connector to the coil assembly bracket. Inspect the underside of the primary ignition coil leads where they cross over the back edge of the coil. It there is any damage to the coil leads or abrasion of the insulation, the coil must be replaced. If no damage is present, proceed to step 4.

NOTE:
DO NOT MODIFY THE COIL ASSEMBLY IF DAMAGE IS PRESENT AT THE PRIMARY LEADS. REMOVE THE COIL WITH THE DAMAGED PRIMARY LEADS FROM THE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY BRACKET AND INSTALL A NEW COIL ONTO THE BRACKET. THEN PROCEED TO STEP 4.

4. Remove the screw that attaches the ignition condenser to the coil assembly bracket. Move the condenser to the position previously occupied by the primary lead connector and bracket as shown in illustration.

5. Reinstall the screw in the position originally occupied by the ignition condenser.

6. Remove the screw that is located diagonally from the condenser's new location. Relocate the primary connector to this screw but install it on the bottom side of the coil assembly bracket facing forward as shown in illustration.

7. Make sure all coil retaining screws have been tightened.

8. Reinstall the ignition coil assembly to the intake manifold using the two 1 2mm hex head bolts.

9. The new position of the ignition coil primary lead connector requires a longer lead from the control wiring harness to allow for proper connection. To expose additional ignition coil lead from the control wiring harness, cut back the wrapping on the harness approximately 11/4 inches as shown below. Gently extend the coil lead and re-tape the control wiring harness with the lead in it's new position.

10. Reconnect the ignition coil electrical leads.

- Secondary coil lead (big black wire)

- Primary coil leads (2 wire connector)

- Ignition condenser lead (single small black wire connector)

11. Test drive the vehicle and confirm that the ignition system functions properly.

12. After completing all mechanical repairs and confirming vehicle operation, make a punch mark over the last digit of the VIN number on the vehicle plate located on the left B-pillar as shown in illustration. Use a center punch and a small hammer.

13. An Authorized Modifications label will need to be applied to the underside of the hood. This label will show that the modifications have been made to the ignition coil assembly wiring position.

Wipe the surface clean before applying the new label.

14. On the Authorized Modifications Label, you will need to write in the following information:

CHANGE AUTHORITY: 012

DEALER CODE: Your Dealer Code

REPAIR DATE: The date of the repair

Note:
California specification vehicles receive a Proof of Completion Certificate (for instructions refer to the California Supplement TSB# 93-O1~OO2) and a label stating the modifications have been approved by CARS. Federal specification vehicles receive a label noting EPA approval.

15. Remove the backing from the clear adhesive on the front of the label, and press down over the label.
