SCOUPE BACK PANEL MOLDING CRACKING - FIELD FIX
DESCRIPTION
The back panel molding on '93 Scoupe vehicles may crack in the upper inside corners of the lamp lenses (see fig. 1). Cracking may result from misaligned back panel molding mounting holes, specifically the two outer holes on the left and right sides (4 holes in total) of the body panel (see fig. 2).
Should you encounter such a condition, please follow the Service Repair Procedure outlined below. THIS IS NOT AN AUTHORIZATION TO REPLACE COMPONENTS, BUT A SERVICE PROCEDURE THAT MAY BE USED TO SATISFY A CUSTOMER COMPLAINT.
SERVICE REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Open the trunk lid.
2. Remove the left and right rear combination inside lamp covers by unscrewing the rear combination lamp cover mounting knob assemblies.
3. Loosen and remove the eight (8) nuts (4/side), securing the left and right sides of the back panel molding to the trunk lid body panel.
4. Disconnect the left and right rear combination lamp wire connectors.
5. Unscrew and remove the two (2) self tapping screws securing the license plate area of the back panel molding.
6. Remove the cracked back panel molding.
7. Locate and examine the two outer mounting holes on each side of the rear trunk lid body panel (see fig. 3). Eliminate the overlap of the panel by using a round file (Snap-On Tool HB4R-Round File or equivalent). Lengthen the inner sides of the outer trunk lid body panel/back panel molding mounting holes (left & right sides) approximately 3-6 mm as shown. Touch-up the re-worked area with primer and and exterior touch-up paint.
8. Install a new back panel molding (P/N 87371-23200CA) ensuring the studs of the panel align properly with the trunk lid body mounting holes and that there is no stress/flex placed on the back panel molding. Should one of these conditions still result, remove the back panel molding and go back to Step # 7.
9. Once the back panel molding is correctly installed, connect the rear combination lamp wire connector plugs. Verify reverse and brake lamp operation.
10. Thread the eight (8) back panel molding nuts (4/side) and tighten until snug, securing the back panel molding to the trunk lid body.
11. Screw the two (2) self tapping screws to the license plate area of the back panel molding, securing the center area of the panel to the trunk lid body.
12. Install the rear combination lamp covers and secure via the rear combination lamp cover mounting knob assemblies (1/cover).
13. Close trunk lid. Procedure complete.
