Steering Column: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

Fig. 4 Rear Motor Speed Operation Check:





1. Remove steering wheel.
2. Remove lower crash pad, then disconnect rheostat connector.
3. Remove column shroud, then disconnect remaining electrical connectors.
4. Remove multifunction switch.
5. Remove universal joint and pinion bolt, Fig. 4.
6. Remove bolts securing column bracket to frame, then remove steering column shaft assembly.
7. Reverse procedure to install.

DISASSEMBLY

1. If necessary, remove steering lock by cutting slot in mounting screw heads and bracket, then unscrew and remove steering wheel lock.
2. Remove snap ring, then the steering shaft downward.
3. If necessary, remove steering column brackets by cutting slot in mounting screw heads, then unscrew and remove column brackets.
4. On tilt column, remove snap ring, then tap out clevis pin from inner side.
5. If necessary, remove tilt lever and mounting bracket.

ASSEMBLY

1. Reverse disassembly procedure.
2. Align steering lock with column boss, insert ignition key to ensure steering lock operates properly, then tighten special bolts until heads twist off.
3. Tighten column bracket special bolts until heads twist off.
