CONDITION: 5-Speed transaxle will not downshift into 4th gear or is difficult to shift into reverse gear.
CAUSE: The 5-speed manual transaxle has a Restrict Ball Assembly that keeps the reverse shift lug properly positioned. If the steel ball in the restrict ball assembly is stuck in the bolt so that it will not retract, it will cause the reverse shift lug to rotate and jam on the 3-4 shift rail when trying to downshift into 4th or shift into reverse.
DIAGNOSIS: Check the Restrict Ball Assembly using the following procedure:
1. Open hood and remove the Restrict Ball Assembly (19 mm bolt) from the top of the transaxle case.
2. The steel ball should be able to move freely. If the steel ball is stuck in the assembly, the assembly must be replaced.
CORRECTION: Replace the restrict ball assembly with a new one and retorque to 22-35 lb.ft. (30-35N-m, 300-350 Kg.cm).
The Restrict Ball Assembly may stick due to contamination and debris in the transmission oil. If sticking of the ball occurs it is recommended that the transaxle oil be changed to prevent this from reoccurring.
Test drive the vehicle to confirm that the condition has been corrected.
