Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

Removal

1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel/tire assembly.
2. On Elantra models, remove axle nut, then the hub and drum assembly, Fig. 2.
3. On Sonata models, remove brake drum. If drum is difficult to remove, screw in bolts to pull drum out.
4. On both models, remove end shoe springs, cylinder and hold down spring, Fig. 3.
5. Remove shoes and adjuster as an assembly.

Inspection

1. Measure inside diameter of brake drum. If I.D. is greater than 9.08 inches, drum is beyond wear limit and should be replaced.
2. Inspect brake lining and drum for proper contact. Replace drum or shoe as necessary.
3. Inspect wheel cylinder for corrosion or damage.
4. Inspect backing plate for wear of damage.

Installation

1. Apply suitable grease to backing plate shoe contact surfaces.
2. Install shoe hold down pin, then assemble return spring with the pushrod shortened.
3. Pull parking brake lever fully upward. Repeat process several times.
