Idle Speed Control

UPDATED BY TSB ENGINE #005

IDLE SPEED CHECK PROCEDURES
This procedure is to check idle speed only. To set idle speed, refer to IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES listed below.
CHECKING CONDITIONS:
Engine coolant temperature is 80 to 95~C (176 to 203~F).
Engine lubricant temperature is over 80~C (176~F).
Lights, electric cooling fan and all accessories are off.
Transmission is in neutral ("P" or "N" range for A/T vehicles).
Steering wheel is straight forward position (vehicles with power steering).

Location Of Diagnostic Connector:

1. Install a tachometer and a timing light, or connect the Hyundai multi-use tester to the diagnosis connector.

Tachometer Hook-up:

NOTE: Insert a paper clip from the harness side, into the connector between the ignition coil and the noise filter. Connect the tachometer to the paper clip.
2. Run the engine at curb idle speed.
3. Check the basic ignition timing and adjust if necessary (see IGNITION TIMING).

BASE IGNITION TIMING: BTDC 5° ± 2°
(At curb idle)

4. Run the engine for more than 5 seconds at an engine speed of 2,000 to 3,000 rpm.
5. Run the engine at idle for 2 minutes.
6. Read the idling rpm. If the multi-use tester is used, press code No.22 and read the idling rpm. If it is not within the specified value, check the idle speed control system, refer to COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS.

CURB IDLE RPM: 750 ± 100 rpm

IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES
ADJUSTMENT CONDITIONS:
CAUTION: If the following procedure is not followed, unstable idle speed and failure of the motor position sensor may result.
Engine coolant temperature, 176°F - 203°F.
Engine lubricant temperature, over 176°F.
Lights, electric cooling fan and all accessories, OFF.
Transmission, in neutral ("P" or "N" range for A/T vehicles).
Steering wheel, in the straight forward position (Vehicles with power steering).

Accelerator Cable Adjustment:

1. Loosen the accelerator cable.

Hyundai Multi-use Tester:

2. Connect the hyundai multi-use tester to the diagnosis connector.

Tachometer Hook-up:

3. If the hyundai multi-use tester is not used, Install a tachometer.
NOTE: Insert a paper clip, from the harness side, into the connector between the primary side of the ignition coil and the noise filter. Connect the tachometer to the paper clip.
4. Turn the ignition switch to ON (do not start the engine) and leave in that position for 15 seconds or longer; then check to be sure that the idle speed control servo is set to the initial position (curb idle)
NOTE: When the ignition switch is turned to ON, the ISC plunger extends to the fast idle position; then, after 15 seconds, it retracts stopping at the initial position.

5. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

ISC Motor Connector Location:

6. Disconnect the ISC motor connector to secure the ISC motor in the initial position.

Fixed SAS Location:

7. Loosen the fixed SAS, then in order to prevent the throttle valve from sticking, open it (half way or more) two or three times, releasing it to click shut.
8. Start the engine and run at idle speed.
9. Check that the engine rpm is within the standard value. If the hyundai multi-use tester is used, press code No.22 and read engine rpm.

CURB IDLE RPM: 700 ± 100 rpm

10. If the engine speed is not as specified, adjust by the ISC adjusting screw for the standard rpm.
11. Tighten the fixed SAS until the engine speed starts to increase. Then, loosen it until the engine speed ceases to drop (touch point). Loosen an additional half turn from the touch point.
12. Stop the engine.
NOTE: If the hyundai multi-use tester is not used, connect a digital type voltmeter between terminals 1 and 2 of the throttle position sensor (or terminals #13 and 18 of the C02-1 connector on the ECU).
Do not disconnect the TPS connector from the throttle body.
13. Turn the ignition switch to ON (engine does not start) and check that the TPS output voltage is as specified.

TPS OUTPUT: 0.48 - 0.52V

TPS Adjustment:

14. If the output is not within specification, loosen TPS mounting screws and adjust by turning the TPS. Turning the TPS clockwise increases the output voltage.
CAUTION: Tighten the screws securely after adjustment.
15. Turn OFF the ignition switch.
16. Adjust the accelerator cable play.

M/T: 0-1 mm
(0-0.04 in.)
A/T: 2-3 mm
(0.08-0.12 in.)

17. Connect the ISC motor connector.
18. Disconnect the voltmeter.
19. Start the engine and check to be sure that the idle speed is correct.
20. Turn OFF the ignition switch and disconnect the battery terminal for 15 seconds and then reconnect. (This erases the data stored in ECU memory during the ISC adjustment).
