ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT TENSION
The multi-ribbed alternator drive belt provides long durability with minimal loss of tension. However, proper belt tension adjustment is necessary and critical because excessively high tension can damage alternator and water pump bearings, while too little tension can allow belt slippage that results in wear and noise.
Tension Specification
Use a Burroughs Belt Tension Gauge (No. BT-33-73F) or equivalent to measure the following:
^ New belt installation initial adjustment 120 +/- 10 lbs.
^ Belts that are in use or newly installed belts after
5 minutes of operation 85 +/- 5 lbs.
NOTE: When installing a new belt, set the initial adjustment and then run the engine for 5 minutes. Check belt tension and, if necessary, readjust to 85 +/- 5 lbs.
