SONATA AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL
The KM175 transmission used in the Sonata is very sensitive to fluid level and improper fluid levels may result in operational problems. When checking the automatic transmission fluid level, the following procedure must be followed to obtain an accurate reading:
1) Park the vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
2) The transmission fluid must be at normal operating temperature (120~ - 180~F).
3) The engine should be at normal idle (750 +/- 100 rpm).
4) Clean any dirt accumulation from the dipstick area.
5) Move the transmission shift selector through all ranges slowly.
6) Place the shift selector in NEUTRAL (N), NOT PARK (P)!!
7) Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean. Reinsert the dipstick, remove it and read the fluid level. It should read between the two notches shown below.
8) Correct the fluid level by adding or draining fluid to bring it within the proper dipstick range. After each occurrence of adding or draining fluid, shift through all ranges and return to N before checking level.
NOTE: Failure to follow this procedure exactly will result in incorrect dipstick readings. Transmission fluid levels above or below the proper dipstick range can cause many types of operational problems. This procedure should be followed before any other transmission repairs are attempted.
