Sonata plastic bumpers are made of a material called Xenoy (pronounced Z-NOY) and will usually sustain only minor scratches in low speed collisions. This minor damage can generally be repaired using the painting procedure outlined below.
These bumpers cannot be repaired when the cross section has been crushed in higher speed collisions because the energy absorbing capability of the material cannot be restored. Bumpers which are permanently deformed, torn, gouged, or heavily scratched must be replaced.
Painting Procedure
1. Scuff the surface of the area to be painted by sanding lightly.
2. Remove all dirt on the sanded surface by cleaning with I.P.A. (ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL).
3. Blow off the surface with clean, dry compressed air.
4. Spray the appropriate two part urethane color coat, carefully following the paint manufacturers instructions on the container label.
5. For metallic colors, allow ten minutes air drying time before application of the clear coat.
6. Oven cure for 30 minutes at 176~F (80~C) to assure proper paint hardness.
