Exhaust System Buzz at 1800 rpm
SYMPTOM
A buzzing noise is heard at 1800 rpm when accelerating at part throttle.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The gasket for the mid-pipe, in front of the catalytic converter, is sticking.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the gaskets (see PARTS INFORMATION) at both ends of the mid-pipe. Use new mounting hardware.
1. Remove the four bolts mounting the mid-pipe to the catalytic converter and exhaust pipe A.
NOTE:
Some models have the heated oxygen sensor mounted in the mid-pipe. Do not damage it while doing this repair.
2. Remove and discard the old gaskets.
3. Apply a coat of a nickel-based anti-seize compound (see RECOMMENDED MATERIALS) to the new exhaust gaskets.
4. Install the new gaskets.
5. Install the mid-pipe to the catalytic converter with new bolts and nuts (see PARTS INFORMATION). Use the original springs. Install the mid-pipe to exhaust pipe A with new nuts and the original springs and bolts. Torque all four nuts to 22 N-m (2.2 kg-m, 16 lb-ft).
