Power Steering Control Unit
DISASSEMBLEFig. 6 Exploded View Of Valve Body Unit:
1. Remove steering gear from vehicle.
2. Remove two control valve body to steering gear flange bolts, Fig. 6.
3. Remove O-rings and port orifices from gearbox.
4. Remove two valve body cap to valve body attaching bolts.
5. Remove cap seal from valve body cap.
6. Remove cut-off valve and spring from valve body.
7. Check cut-off valve surface for any scoring or scratches, then slip it back into the valve body and ensure it slides smoothly without any drag or play. If any part of the valve body is damaged, replace the valve body unit as an assembly.
8. Separate valve body and port housing, then remove seals and dowel pins from port housing.
9. Remove pinion dust seal and O-ring from port housing.
10. Remove rollers from control valve by pushing valve out one side of valve body, then the other. When removing rollers, hold plungers with your fingers to keep them from popping out.
11. Remove plungers, return springs and 4-way control valve from valve body.
12. Remove O-ring from 4-way control valve.
13. Check plungers for any scoring or scratches, then slip each plunger into the valve body and ensure that it slides smoothly, without drag or side play.
14. Check 4-way control valve for any scoring or scratches, then slip each 4-way control valve into the valve body and ensure that it slides smoothly, without drag or side play.
ASSEMBLE
1. Thoroughly clean all disassembled parts, then coat plungers, cut-off valve and 4-way control valve surfaces with power steering fluid.
2. Coat )-ring with grease, then install it on the 4-way control valve.
3. Install 4-way control valve, plungers, return springs and rollers into valve body.
4. Install new pinion dust seal in control valve body unit.
5. Coat O-ring and port seal with grease and install them into port housing.
6. Install dowel pins and valve body on port housing.
7. Install cut-off valve spring and cut-off valve.
8. Coat cap seal with grease and install valve body cap.
9. Install flange bolts into control valve body unit, torque to 9 ft. lbs.
10. Ensure control valve moves smoothly and returns to neutral position.
11. Coat O-rings and pinion holder pin with grease, then install them with the port orifices.
