Power Steering Rack Seal Squeak
(Supersedes 92-004, dated February 7, 1992)

SYMPTOM

A squeak sounds like it is coming from the steering wheel or steering column area. It is usually heard when making a tight, low-speed, right-hand turn.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The right side steering rack end seal is not adequately lubricated.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

The corrective action to be used depends on the year and VIN of the vehicle. Use the charts to select the proper procedure.

NOTE:
Check the service history of the vehicle before proceeding with Corrective Action B or C. It may have already received a new rack end seal and/or PSF-V power steering fluid.

CORRECTIVE ACTION A

Install PSF-V additive in the power steering system, and lubricate the pinion shaft.

1. Add one packet (18 cc) of PSF-V additive to the power steering reservoir. Do not add more than one packet, too much additive may affect seat durability.

2. If necessary, top up the reservoir with Honda PSF-V power steering fluid.

3. Thoroughly clean the top of the power steering fluid reservoir. Install the label that came with the PSF-V additive on top of the reservoir as shown.

4. Remove the lower steering column cover.

5. Lubricate the pinion shaft and grommet bore with lithium dielectric grease. Spray silicone lubricant through the grommet bore into the pinion boot. (See REQUIRED MATERIALS.)

6. Reinstall the lower steering column cover.

CORRECTIVE ACTION B

Install Honda PSF-V power steering fluid and additive in the system, and lubricate the pinion shaft.

1. Drain the power steering fluid from the system.

2. Fill the power steering system with Honda PSF-V power steering fluid, and bleed the system.

3. Add one packet (18 cc) of PSF-V additive to the power steering reservoir. Do not add more than one packet, too much additive may affect seal durability.

4. Thoroughly clean the top of the power steering fluid reservoir. Install the label that came with the PSF-V additive on top of the reservoir as shown.

5. Remove the lower steering column cover.

6. Lubricate the pinion shaft and grommet bore with lithium dielectric grease. Spray silicone lubricant through the grommet bore into the pinion boot. (See REQUIRED MATERIALS.)

7. Reinstall the lower steering column cover.

CORRECTIVE ACTION C

Replace the right side end seal in the steering rack with the part listed under PARTS INFORMATION. Install Honda PSF-V power steering fluid and the proper amount of PSF-V additive to the system. Lubricate the pinion shaft.

1. Drain the power steering fluid from the system.

2. Remove the power steering gearbox and the right side tie rod from the car. Refer to section 17 of the appropriate service manual.

3. Remove the cylinder housing; then remove the cylinder housing end seal. To avoid damaging the cylinder housing, use your fingers or a wood dowel to remove the end seal.

4. Coat the inside of the cylinder housing with PSF-V power steering fluid (P/N 08206-9002). Install the new end seal with the grooved side facing out.

5. Reassemble the power steering gearbox with the parts listed under PARTS INFORMATION.

6. Reinstall the power steering gearbox and right side tie rod in the car.

7. Fill the power steering system with Honda PSF-V power steering fluid, and bleed the system.

[NEW] 8. Add one packet (18 cc) of PSF-V additive to the power steering reservoir. Do not add more than one packet, too much additive may affect seal durability.

9. Thoroughly clean the top of the power steering fluid reservoir. Install the label that came with the PSF-V additive on top of the reservoir as shown.

10. Reset the front toe to the service manual specification.

11. Remove the lower steering column cover.

12. Lubricate the pinion shaft and grommet bore with lithium dielectric grease. Spray silicone lubricant through the grommet bore into the pinion boot. (See REQUIRED MATERIALS.)

13. Reinstall the lower steering column cover.
