Balance Shaft Belt: Adjustments

CAUTION: Always adjust timing belt tension with the engine cold.

NOTE: For more detailed instructions on timing cover access and removal, refer to Timing Belt. Service and Repair

1. Disconnect the alternator terminal and the connector, then remove the engine wire harness from the cylinder head cover.
2. Remove the cylinder head cover.
3. Remove the timing belt upper cover.
4. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
5. Remove the timing belt lower cover.
6. Install the crankshaft pulley.

Timing Balancer Belt Inspection:

7. Inspect the timing belt for cracks and oil soaking.

NOTE:
- Replace the belt if oil soaked.
- Remove any oil or solvent that gets on the belt.

8. Perform the timing belt tension adjustment:
- Loosen the adjusting nut 2/3-1 turn, then tighten adjusting nut.
- Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise 3-teeth on the camshaft pulley, then reloosen the adjusting nut to create tension on the timing belt.
- Tighten the adjusting nut.

Front View Belt Positioning:

9. Tighten the 6 x 1.0 mm bolt to lock the timing adjuster arm.
10. Make sure the crankshaft is positioned with the No.1 cylinder at TDC.

Front View Belt Positioning:

11. Verify alignment of the groove on the front balancer shaft pulley with the pointer on the oil pump housing as shown.
12. Verify alignment of the rear balancer shaft pulley by using a 6 x 100 mm bolt or equivalent as an alignment tool. Scribe a line 74 mm (2.9 in) from the end of the bolt. Insert the bolt into the maintenance hole to the scribed line.
13. Loosen the adjusting nut and verify that the timing balancer belt adjuster moves freely. Remove the alignment tool.
14. Turn the crankshaft pulley about one turn, then tighten the adjusting nut to 45Nm (4.5 kg-m, 33 lb ft).
NOTE: Both belt adjusters are spring-loaded to properly tension the belts. Do not apply any extra pressure to the pulleys or tensioners while performing the adjustment.

15. Remove the 6 x 1.0 mm bolt from the timing belt adjuster arm.

Front Cover And Crank Pulley Installation:

16. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
17. Install the timing belt lower cover.
18. Install a new seal around the adjusting nut. Do not loosen the nut.
19. Install the timing belt upper cover.
20. Install the crankshaft pulley.
21. Coat the threads and seat face of the pulley bolt with engine oil. Install and tighten to the specified torque.

Specified torque: 220 Nm (22 kg-m. 159 lb-ft)
