Driveshaft Joint Boot Leaks Grease
(Supersedes 92-010, dated February 21, 1992)
PROBLEM
Grease is leaking out of the driveshaft joint boot.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Add grease to the CV joint and reband the driveshaft joint boot.
1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
M/T: Remove the wheel to access the outboard boot.
A/T: Remove the center beam to access the driver's side inboard boot.
2. Clean the grease and dirt off the joint hub with a solvent rag.
3. Sever the joint boot band on the end that's leaking with a pair of diagonal cutters.
4. Pull the joint boot back and add grease to the CV joint. The inboard and outboard joints use different grease. See PARTS INFORMATION.
To estimate how much grease has leaked out, examine the area surrounding the joint. The original amount of grease in the driveshaft joint boot is:
Inboard Joint - 120 - 130 grams
Outboard Joint - 130 - 140 grams
5. Install the new boot band and bend the tabs over. Use a 1/4 inch flat drift punch to peen the center of the tabs.
