If excessive exhaust system back-pressure is suspected or if tail-pipe emissions are high and all other systems check OK, remove the catalytic converter from the car and make a visual check for plugging, melting or cracking of the ceramic grid inside. If any of the visible areas are damaged, replace the catalytic converter.
