SYMPTOM

Excessive force is required to open and close the trunk. The key lock and trunk release lever are hard to operate. The trunk lid latches fully only when slammed.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Perform the following adjustments. Do the steps in order, checking the force required to open and close the trunk after each step. When the trunk is easy to open/close, go directly to step 7. It may not be necessary to do all the steps.

1. Visually inspect the trunk lid fit. Note any alignment problems. Refer to section 21 of the appropriate service manual for adjustment procedures.

2. Add or remove shims under the striker to align the lid with the rear body line.

3. Adjust the striker upward to reduce seal compression, and horizontally to center it in the trunk latch. The taillight/backup light dividing lines on the fender and trunk lid should line up when adjusted correctly.

4. Check the adjustment of the edge cushions by pushing on the corners of the trunk lid when it is closed. The cushions should just make contact with the fenders. Screw them in or out as necessary.

NOTE: If the trunk now opens and closes easily, go to step 7.

5. Remove the trunk lid seal around each taillight. As shown below, use a plastic hammer OR block of wood and a hammer to bend the metal lip inward slightly, no more than 3 mm, in the area along the edge of the taillight. Reinstall the trunk lid seal.
6. Check the adjustment of the striker and readjust if needed.

7. Check for water leaks with a garden hose. Run the water over the trunk lid, do not spray with a high-pressure nozzle.
