CORRECTIVE ACTION B

Vehicles Normally Driven in Areas of Heavy Salt Use

Clean the fuel filler pipe assembly and spray it with several coats of rust-preventive and protectant (see REQUIRED MATERIALS).

1. Use a high pressure washer or water hose to clean the fuel filler pipe, separator pipe, and the surrounding wheelwell.

2. Raise the car and remove the left rear wheel.

3. Use an air nozzle to dry the fuel filler and separator pipes. Pay particular attention to the numbered areas shown below.

Note
The pipes must be completely dry for the rust preventive to adhere properly.

4. Remove the two bolts holding the fuel filler pipe to the frame rail.

5. Open the fuel filler door and remove the filler cap. Loosen, but do not remove, the three nuts holding the filler pipe to the body. Reinstall the filler cap.

6. Examine the filler pipe mounting area in the body. If it has rusted away, or is weakened by rust, install an adapter plate. See Adapter Plate Installation.

7. Use a gasket scraper or Exacto knife to remove any loose or flaking pieces of the fuel filler pipe assembly's original black plastic coating. Inspect those areas for signs of fuel leakage. Replace the fuel filler pipe assembly only if you find signs of perforation or leaking.

8. Spray all parts of the fuel filler pipe assembly with 3M Rust Fighter I. Coat it completely, with a heavier coating in the shaded areas shown.

9. Allow to dry for five minutes. Apply two more coats of Rust Fighter I, allowing five minutes drying time after each coat.

10. Inspect the fuel filler pipe assembly for any areas that are not coated well. Respray any areas you find.

11. Apply a coat of Noxrust 124B to the filler pipe assembly.

12. Install the two fuel filler pipe mounting bolts and tighten the three mounting nuts. Allow the Noxrust 124B to dry for 20 minutes.

13. Go to Completion Procedure. New Fuel Filler Pipe Installation

If it is necessary to replace the fuel filler pipe, install the tube kit to the pipe assembly before installing the assembly in the car.

1. Spray the inside of the flexible tubing from the kit with silicone spray.

2. Spray the end of the 6.3 mm metal vent tube on the pipe assembly with silicone spray.

3. Push the flexible tubing onto the vent tube. Do not use any tools; they may tear the tubing.

20. Remove the quarter window trim in the area shown.

21. Loosen two clips on the window upper trim. Loosen six clips on the rear pillar trim panel. Remove the panel.

22. Go to step 23. (Sensor Replacement)
