Steering - Power Steering Moan

Model Applicable To File Under Bulletin No.

'84-85 86-016
ACCORD ALL STEERING Issue Date
'84-86
PRELUDE AUG 29,'86
SYMPTOM

A moaning noise from the power steering rack, usually on hard left turns.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the power steering control valve with an improved part.

1. Remove the control valve from the power steering valve body assembly, using the procedure outlined in the Service Manual.

2. Inspect the control valve carefully to determine its size and replace it with a new valve of the same size.

Control Valve Identification:

CONTROL VALVE IDENTIFICATION:

^ Control valves are sized to fit the valve bodies; they come in 3 sizes, marked "X," "Y" and "Z."

^ The original valve will have its identification letter inked in one of three locations. Even if the letter itself is illegible, a trace of ink will indicate the size by its location on the valve.
^ If all traces of the letter or ink are gone, use a size "Y" valve.

^ If a new valve does not correct the moaning noise or the test drive reveals poor power assist, contact your DSM for authorization for a valve body assembly replacement.

Bleeding Procedure:

BLEEDING PROCEDURE:

After installation of the correct size control valve, use the following procedure to bleed any air from the system:

NOTE: Be sure that the reservoir is full and that the cap is on the reservoir.

1. While the car is still on the hoist, start the engine, put the car in gear and drive for five minutes at 38 mph or above.

2. Stop the engine, check the fluid level and add power steering fluid as necessary..

3. With the engine off, bleed the valve body at the following fittings, one at a time, in the order shown.

ORDER FITTING WRENCH SIZE

1st "S" 12 mm
2nd "P" 14 mm
3rd "D" 12 mm

NOTE: Do not loosen fitting "T."

If there is any air, bubbles will form while the fluid is seeping; check each fitting and bleed until there are no more air bubbles.
4. Recheck fluid level and add power steering fluid as necessary.

5. Before test driving the car, start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock to lock several times with the vehicle on the ground and stationary.

6. Test drive at slow speeds, making both left and right turns.
