Instrument Panel Squeak (Supersedes 84-031 dated May 21, '84)
SYMPTOM
Squeaking from the instrument panel bezel.
DIAGNOSIS
Pushing on the corners of the bezel stops the squeak.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
1. Remove the steering wheel.
Instrument Panel:
2. Remove the 3 screws holding the bezel, spray some Honda Vinyl Protectant (H/C 1385798) between the bezel and the surrounding instrument panel, then remove the bezel.
NOTE: If the bezel won't come out, use the Honda A/C Clutch Holder (T/N 07923- PB80001, H/C 1459130) and Bearing/ Trans Case Puller (T/N 07936-6340000, H/C 0456028) to remove it:
A/C CLUTCH HOLDER T/N 07923-PB80001 H/C 1459130:
^ Disassemble the A/C Clutch Holder by placing its handle in a vise and unscrewing the clamping plate until it pushes the clamping block off the end of the handle. (To reassemble, thread the handle into the clamping plate, then tap the clamping block back onto the handle with a plastic hammer.)
BEARING/TRANS CASE PULLER:
^ Remove the fittings from the end of the Bearing/Trans Case Puller then attach the clamping plate to it as shown.
BEZEL:
^ Pry up on the bezel with a screwdriver, slip the clamping plate under the bezel, then tap with the puller until the bezel comes out.
Back Edge of Bezel:
4. Inspect the back edge of the bezel for polished areas - these indicate points of contact. Remove about 1 mm of material from each polished area with a file, then coat the edge of the bezel with silicone grease (Dow Corning III, or equivalent) and reinstall it.
