Steering Wheel Alignment
PROBLEM
After a full-lock turn (wheels turned all the way right or left), the steering wheel doesn't come all the way back to "center" when the car returns to straight ahead (the spokes stay angled slightly toward the direction of the turn).
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the rubber mount bushing on the left end of the steering gearbox with the new stiffer bushing listed under PARTS INFORMATION.
CAUTION: The bushing must be installed dry. Do not grease it and try to "squeeze" it into place without dropping the gearbox; you not only could damage the bushing, but the grease would let the gearbox move in its mounts.
1. Disconnect the steering shaft connector:
2. Remove the rear bolts from the center beam, then just loosen the front bolts and let the beam hang out of the way.
3. Remove the shield covering the gearbox control unit.
4. Remove both steering gearbox mount brackets, then pull the gearbox down and remove and discard the left mount bushing.
5. Make sure the mount bracket and the mount areas on the gearbox and the frame are clean and dry. Then slip the new bushing on with its split side toward the rear of the car.
6. Reinstall the gearbox and torque its mount bolts to 22 Nm (16 ft. lb.).
7. Reinstall the control unit shield.
8. Reinstall the center beam and torque its bofts to 50 Nm (36 lb. ft.).
9. Reconnect the steering shaft connector (line up the top edge with the mark you made on the splines) and torque its bolts to 30 Nm (22 lb. ft.).
10. Reinstall the boot.
11. Road test the car. If the steering wheel is still turned toward one side while you're driving straight ahead, adjust both tie rods in the other direction to bring it back "on center."
NOTE: One full turn of the tie rods will change steering position by 10~. If, for example, the wheel is off 10~ to the right, adjust both tie rods to the left one turn.
