Accord Stalling at Idle (Supersedes 84-050 dated OCT 1, '84)

PROBLEM

Some '84 Accords may stall at idle when the engine is warm.

CAUSE

The primary slow mixture cut-off solenoid is sticking.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

1. With the engine fully warmed up and idling, switch the ignition on and off rapidly ten times without allowing the engine to die until the tenth time. Now start the engine without touching the throttle. If the engine won't start, the primary slow mixture cut-off solenoid is bad; replace it with the updated solenoid. If the engine starts, go to step 2.

NOTE:

^ The diagnostic procedure described in step 1 will identify most bad solenoids. Use step 2 to verify the condition of an apparently "good" solenoid.

^ To perform step 2 you'll need "dummy" solenoid. Use a failed solenoid that has had its plunger cut off flush with its body.

2. Remove the primary slow mixture cut-off solenoid and install the dummy solenoid (with the O-ring) in its place. Test drive the car. If the engine no longer stalls, the original solenoid is bad; replace it with the updated type.

WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION

For diagnosis and solenoid replacement, use operation number 120121 and a flat rate time of 0.3 hour. For diagnosis only (no solenoid replacement), use operation number 120521 and a flat rate time of 0.3 hour.
