PROBLEM Inspection of all EGR valves replaced under warranty has shown that, in nearly all cases of apparent EGR malfunction, replacement of the EGR valve itself was unnecessary.
DIAGNOSIS Before replacing an EGR valve:
1. Use a hand vacuum pump to open the EGR valve while the engine is idling.
^ If the engine runs rough or stalls, the EGR valve is working normally.
2. If the EGR valve is working normally, use a vacuum gauge to check the vacuum to it.
The vacuum reading should be 2-6 in. Hg., at 4500 rpm, for all models.
^ If the vacuum reading is greater than 6 in. Hg., check for a kinked No. 1 1 hose under the air cleaner.
^ If the No. 11 hose is not kinked, perform a thorough inspection of all related vacuum hoses from the carburetor to the EGR control valve (located within the control box).
NOTE: If no pinched hoses are found, contact the Emission Tech Line - (213) 604-2679 - for further information (please have your dealer number, full 17 character VIN, and the vacuum reading at 4500 rpm on hand when you call).
WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION All EGR valves replaced under warranty will be called in and tested.
