REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE:
Take care not to spill the P/S fluid on the body and parts. Wipe off any spilled fluid at once.

1. Temporarily reinstall the P/S pump and the drive belt to drain the P/S fluid.

2. Drain the fluid reservoir:

- Remove the P/S fluid reservoir from its holder.

- Raise the P/S fluid reservoir.

- Disconnect the return hose.

- Drain the P/S fluid reservoir into a container.

- Plug the P/S fluid reservoir.

3. Drain the P/S system.

- Put the disconnected return hose end into a suitable container.

- Start the engine, and let it idle.

- Turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times. When fluid stops running out of the hose, shut off the engine, and discard the fluid.

4. Remove the drive belt using the belt tension release tool.

5. Remove the P/S pump.

NOTE:
Do not turn the steering wheel with the P/S pump removed.

- Cover the auto-tensioner, the alternator, and the A/C compressor with several shop towels to protect them from spilled P/S fluid.

- Remove the P/S pump mounting bolts.

- Disconnect the pump return hose from the pump.

- Disconnect the pump outlet hose from the pump.

6. Loosely install a new P/S pump with the mounting bolts. Do not reconnect the hoses.

7. Raise the vehicle on the lift.

8. Disconnect the return hose from the return line joint at the P/S gearbox.

9. Pull out the return hose so that it hangs from the vehicle as shown.

10. Lower the vehicle, and place the return hose end in a container.

11. Using shop air, insert an air gun into the return hose at the P/S fluid reservoir, and blow the hose out for 30 seconds.

12. Insert a funnel at the same return hose opening as the air gun, and pour P/S fluid through the hose until the fluid coming out of the bottom of the hose is clean.

13. Remove the P/S gearbox.

- Refer to 2007-2008 CR-V Service Manual, or

- Online, enter keyword GEARBOX and select Steering Gearbox Removal from the list.

NOTE:
Refer to steps 5 thru 30, but ignore step 6 as you do not need to remove the steering wheel to remove the P/S gearbox.

14. Replace the P/S pump outlet hose.

15. Replace the P/S fluid reservoir.

16. Install the new P/S gearbox.

- Refer to service manual, or

- Online, enter keyword GEARBOX and select Steering Gearbox Installation from the list.

17. Connect all outlet and return hoses.

18. Fill the P/S reservoir with new P/S fluid to the upper line.

19. Tighten the P/S pump mounting bolts to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft).

20. Reinstall the drive belt.

21. Bleed the P/S system:

- Start the engine, and run it at a fast idle.

- Slowly turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times.

- Recheck the fluid level, and add more if needed. Do not fill the reservoir past the upper level line.

22. Center-punch a completion mark above the 1st character of the engine compartment VIN.
