Replacing the Steering Lock Assembly
1. Position the front wheels and the steering wheel straight ahead.2. Write down the radio station presets, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. On vehicles with SRS, remove the instrument panel lower cover.
4. Remove the steering column covers.
5. Remove the steering wheel cover.
WARNING
To prevent accidental airbag deployment, turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect the negative battery cable, and wait at least five minutes before disconnecting any SRS connectors. See 1995.5 or later Passport Service Manual for airbag handling instructions.
6. Make a mark across the steering wheel and shaft for alignment during reassembly. Then remove the steering wheel with a commercially available puller (Kent-Moore T/N J-29752 or equivalent). To avoid damaging the collapsible steering column, do not attempt to remove the steering wheel without a puller.
7. Remove the combination switch.
8. Remove the steering lock assembly.
9. Install the new steering lock assembly.
10. Reinstall the combination switch in the reverse order of removal (refer to step 7).
11. Reinstall the steering wheel.
12. Reinstall the steering wheel cover in the reverse order of removal (refer to step 5). On vehicles with SRS, torque the four airbag Torx bolts to 8 Nm (69 lb-in).
13. Reinstall the steering column covers in the reverse order of removal (refer to step 4). Make sure you position the wire harnesses the same as before they were removed.
14. On vehicles with SRS, reinstall the instrument panel lower cover (refer to step 3).
15. Reconnect the negative battery cable, enter the radio station presets, and set the clock. Continue with Adjusting the Shift Lock Cable.
