Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
CAUTION: When reusing brake shoes install them in the same position they were removed from. Do not switch the position of shoes that have been in service as this may render the self-adjustment feature inoperative and result in increased pedal travel.NOTE: - Tool Required:
^ J-26900-7, or equivalent dial caliper.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Brake drum.
2. Pawl lever and adjuster spring.
3. Upper shoe return spring and adjuster.
4. Shoe hold down springs by turning shoe hold down pins.
5. Lower shoe return spring and brake shoes.
6. Disconnect parking brake cable from parking brake shoe lever.
7. Parking brake shoe lever from shoe lining.
8. Inspect all drum brake components for wear, distortion, cracks, or other abnormal conditions and replace as necessary.
9. Measure the lining thickness using a dial caliper. If thickness of lining is less than 3 mm (0.12 inch), replace the brake shoes (always replace brake shoes in axle sets).
NOTE: Apply GM P/N 1050109, or equivalent white lithium grease, to all brake component metal contact points (where brake shoe metal contacts backing plate, wheel cylinder and adjustment strut, etc.) prior to installation.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Parking brake shoe lever to shoe lining.
2. Connect parking brake cable to parking brake shoe lever.
3. Lower shoe return spring and brake shoes.
4. Shoe hold down springs by pushing them down in place and turning hold down pins.
5. Upper shoe return spring and adjuster.
6. Pawl lever and adjuster spring.
7. Brake drum.
