Brake Caliper Replacement


Removal Procedure
1. Remove two-thirds of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.
2. Raise the vehicle.
3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.





4. Position a C-clamp around the outer pad and the caliper. Tighten the clamp until the piston bottoms in its bore.
5. Remove the C-clamp.
6. Remove the brake hose from the caliper.





7. Remove the mounting bolts.
8. Remove the caliper assembly.
9. Remove the brake pads. Refer to Brake Pads Replacement.





10. Remove the bushings.
11. Remove the sleeves (RWD only).
12. Replace any corroded bolts or sleeves. Do not attempt to polish away any corrosion.

Installation Procedure





1. Lubricate the sleeves and the bushings with Delco Silicone Lube GM P/N 18010909 or the equivalent.





2. Install the bushings.
3. Install the sleeves (RWD only).
4. Install the brake pads. Refer to Brake Pads Replacement.
5. Install the caliper assembly.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





6. Install the mounting bolts.
- Tighten the bolts to 51 Nm (38 lb ft).
7. Install the brake hose to the caliper.
- Tighten the bolt to 44 Nm (32 lb ft).





8. Measure the clearance between the caliper and the steering knuckle.
Measure the clearance at each end of the caliper individually and then add the measurements together.

Specification
The total should be 0.26 - 0.60 mm (0.010 - 0.024 inch).

- If the total clearance between the caliper and the steering knuckle is less than 0.26 mm (0.010 inch), file the steering knuckle equally on each side until the proper clearance is obtained.
- If the total clearance between the caliper and the steering knuckle is more than 0.60 mm (0.024 inch), inspect the brake caliper and the steering knuckle for damage and replace as needed.

9. Install the tire and wheel.
10. Lower the vehicle.

Important: Before moving the vehicle, pump the brake pedal until it is firm. Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder after pumping the brakes.

11. Bleed the brake system.
