Backing Plate: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure
1. Raise the vehicle.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
3. Mark the relationship of the brake drum to the axle.
4. Remove the brake drum. Remove the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement.
6. Remove the wheel cylinder. Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement.
7. Remove the axle shaft.
8. Remove the bolts and the washers.





9. Remove the backing plate.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the backing plate.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the bolts and the washers.
- Tighten the bolts to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the axle shaft.
4. Install the wheel cylinder.
5. Install the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement.
6. Install the brake drum. Align the marks made during disassembly. 7. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Bleed the brake system.
