A/C - Compressor Noise On Start-Up

Group Ref.: HVAC

Bulletin No.: 361204

Date: December, 1993

SUBJECT:
AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR "SLUGGING" OR RATTLING ON START-UP (REPLACE ACCUMULATOR)

MODELS:
1993 CHEVROLET AND GMC G VANS WITH HR6 AIR COMPRESSOR

CONDITION:
Some owners may comment on an audible "slugging" or rattling noise coming from the compressor when the vehicle is started and the air conditioning system is on.

CAUSE:

Refrigerant from the accumulator may propagate to the air compressor where it can condense to a liquid state. With the engine off, the refrigerant collects inside the compressor cavity. When the engine is started and the air conditioner is on, the liquid refrigerant passes through the compressor causing the slugging or rattling sound. The sound will go away once the refrigerant has passed through the compressor.

CORRECTION:
A new accumulator with a pressure equalization hole must be installed. This new accumulator will minimize refrigerant transfer to the compressor.
