INSTALLATION

All vehicles

1. CAUTION: The torque converter cover is piloted into position to the engine crankshaft by dowels in the rear of the engine block. The torque converter must rest squarely and loosely against the flexplate. This indicates that the torque converter pilot is not binding in the engine crankshaft.

Position and secure the transmission on the high-lift transmission jack.





2. Install the special tool.

3. NOTE: Make sure the torque converter is fully seated in the transmission before aligning the transmission to the engine.

Raise and position the transmission into the vehicle.
Align the orange balancing marks between the torque converter studs and the flexplate bolt holes.





4. Remove the special tool.





4.2L engines
5. Install the nine transmission-to-engine bolts.
1 Install the fuel line and bracket.
2 Install the fill tube.





4.6L and 5.4L engines
6. Install the seven transmission-to-engine bolts.
1 Install the fuel line and bracket.
2 Install the bolts.





7. Connect the transmission fluid cooler tubes.
8. Remove the high-lift transmission jack.





4.6L and 5.4L engines
9. Install the upper transmission fluid fill tube.





10. Install the transmission fluid fill tube bolt on the RH side of the cylinder head.





11. Position the exhaust hanger, the rear transmission insulator and install the bolts.





All vehicles
12. Install the transmission support crossmember, the LH and RH bolts and the nuts.





4.2L and 4.6L engines
13. Install the nut for the exhaust bracket.





4.6L engines
14. Install the exhaust bracket nut.





All vehicles
15. Remove the nuts.





16. Remove the two bolts retaining the heat shield to the transmission support crossmember.





17. Connect the solenoid body assembly electrical connector.





18. Install the wire harness bracket and install the nuts.





19. Connect the transmission electrical connectors.
1 Connect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor.
2 Connect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor.





20. Install the shift cable bracket and connect the transmission shift linkage.
1 Install the bracket.
2 Connect shift cable end.





4.6L and 5.4L engines
21. Install the torque converter nuts.





22. Install the rubber access plug.





23. Install the transmission inspection cover.





All engines
24. Install the torque converter nuts.





25. Install the rubber access plug.





4.2L engines
26. Install the starter motor bolt and the stud bolt.





4.6L engines
27. Install the starter motor and the three bolts.





28. NOTE: The 4.2L engine is shown, the 4.6L and 5.4L engines are similar.

Connect the cable and install the motor nut.





29. NOTE: The 4.2L engine is shown, the 4.6L and 5.4L engines are similar.

Connect the starter motor electrical connectors.
1 Position the starter solenoid wire.
2 Position the battery cable.
3 Install the nuts.





30. Install the starter motor solenoid terminal cover.





4x4 vehicles
31. Align the marks made during removal, install the front driveshaft flange.





4x2 vehicles

32. NOTE: The output shaft and the driveshaft are a balanced assembly.

Install the driveshaft. Align the yellow dots and position the driveshaft on the transmission.





33. NOTE: To maintain initial driveshaft balance, align the index marks made during removal.

Install the rear driveshaft.
1 Position the driveshaft.
2 Install the four bolts.

4x4 vehicles
34. Install the transfer case.





All vehicles

35. NOTE: If the vehicle was not equipped with an inline fluid filter, install a fluid filter service kit (XC3Z7B155-AA). Follow the instructions supplied in the kit. If the vehicle is equipped with an in-line fluid filter, install a new fluid filter (XC3Z-7B155-BA).

Install a new in-line transmission fluid filter or filter kit and check for leaks.
36. Lower the vehicle.
37. Connect the battery ground cable.
38. Fill the transmission with clean automatic transmission fluid and inspect for correct operation.
39. Place the shift lever in park.
