Removal

1. NOTE: All gasoline vehicles will have new adaptive shift strategies. Whenever the vehicle's battery has been disconnected for any type of service or repair the strategy parameters that are stored in the Keep Alive Memory (KAM) will be lost. The strategy will start to relearn once the battery is reconnected and the vehicle is driven. This is a temporary condition and will return to normal operating condition once the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns all the parameters from the driving conditions. There is no set time frame for this process. If this concern is present during downshifts or converter clutch apply, it is not the fault of the shift strategy and will require diagnosis.

The customer needs to be notified that they may experience slightly different upshifts either soft or firm and that this is a temporary condition and will eventually return to normal operating condition. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

2. NOTE: 4x2 shown, 4x4 similar.

Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

3. NOTE: To maintain initial driveshaft balance, mark the driveshaft yoke and axle flange so they may be installed in their original position.

Remove the driveshaft.
1 Remove the four bolts.
2 Remove the driveshaft.

4. Remove the transmission insulator to crossmember support nuts.

5. Remove the transmission fluid pan bolts.

6. Install the high lift transmission jack with the special tool to the transmission.

7. CAUTION: Be sure not to raise the back of the transmission too high. If it makes contact with the underbody damage to the TSS and OSS sensors will occur.

Raise the transmission up off the rear crossmember support.

8. Remove the transmission insulator.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the transmission insulator.

9. NOTE: As the fasteners are removed, note the size of each for correct location during installation.

1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the transmission extension housing.

10. Remove and discard the extension housing gasket.

Installation

1. CAUTION: The extension must have a shoulder or a boss cast in it to hold the orifice lube plug in the back of the case. If the wrong extension housing is used the plug may become loose and/or fall out and cause transmission damage.

NOTE: Lightly lubricate the gasket with petroleum jelly to hold it in place during assembly.

Install the new extension housing gasket.
1 Verify that the extension has a shoulder cast in it.
2 Install the new extension housing gasket.

2. NOTE: Make sure the fasteners are installed in their correct locations as noted during removal.

Install the eight extension housing bolts.

3. Install the transmission insulator.
1 Raise the transmission up.
2 Install the rear transmission mount.
3 Install the bolts.

4. Lower the transmission onto the transmission support crossmember.

5. Install the transmission insulator and retainer-to-crossmember retaining nuts.

6. Remove the high lift transmission jack with the special tool from the transmission.

7. Install the transmission fluid pan-to-case retaining bolts.

8. NOTE: To maintain initial driveshaft balance, align the marks on the driveshaft yoke and axle flange so they may be installed in their original positions.

Install the driveshaft.
1 Position the driveshaft.
2 Install the four bolts.

9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
11. Check fluid level, fill with clean automatic transmission fluid.
12. Check for correct operation.
