Paint - Bumper Peel Service Procedure

BODY-PAINT-BUMPER PEEL-SERVICE PROCEDURE

FORD: 2001-2002 E SERIES

ISSUE
Some vehicles may exhibit a peel or premature erosion of the paint on the bumper. This is due to the topcoat passing too much UV light in service.

ACTION
Read this TSB in its entirety BEFORE beginning any repairs. Refer to the following Service Procedures for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE
THIS PROCEDURE CAN BE APPLIED TO FRONT OR REAR BUMPER.


There are three conditions that may be encountered when refinishing bumpers that are damaged:
- Refinishing bumpers for visual appearance - Follow Steps 1 through 12.
- Replacing bumpers - If the service replacement part has a Black E-Coat matte finish, follow Steps 4 through 12.
- Replacing bumpers - If the service replacement part has a matte grey primer, follow Steps 8 through 12.

NOTE
READ THIS REPAIR PROCEDURE COMPLETELY BEFORE PERFORMING ANY SERVICE ACTIONS.


1. Follow the Econoline Workshop Manual Section 501-19-01 for bumper removal procedure.
2. Set the bumper on a suitable stand for sanding.

CAUTION
TECHNICIAN PERFORMING THE SANDING OPERATION SHOULD WEAR AN APPROVED RESPIRATOR WITH HIGH EFFICIENCY PARTICULATE FILTERS (HEPA). TECHNICIANS SHOULD USE A DUAL ACTION SANDER WITH VACUUM COLLECTION EQUIPMENT. THE VACUUM EQUIPMENT MUST BE EQUIPPED WITH A HEPA FILTER ON THE AIR EXHAUST. OPERATORS ARE CAUTIONED TO FOLLOW MANUFACTURES GUIDELINES FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPLACEMENT OF THESE FILTERS.


3. Remove all topcoat and primer to bare metal with 80 grit sanding discs on a D.A. vacuum sander. Blow off the bumper with compressed air to remove loose dust and debris.

NOTE
IF MEDIA BLASTING IS TO BE USED, STEPS 2 AND 3 ARE DELETED.


4. Wipe the bumper with a wax and grease remover. Wipe dry using a clean, lint-free cloth to remove all residue. Keep wiping until the surface is completely dry. Note: Any remaining residue may result in contaminating the coatings to be applied following this step.
5. Mix and apply Ford Approved epoxy or self-etching primer to the bumper and let flash per manufacturers label recommendations.
6. Mix and apply two full wet coats (2.0 mils min.) of Ford Approved primer surfacer following the manufacturers label recommendations and bake at 140°F (60°C) panel temperature per manufacturers recommended baking time.
7. Sand the bumper with 400 - 600 grit sandpaper.
8. Blow off the area with compressed air to remove loose dust and debris.
9. Wipe the bumper with a wax and grease remover. Wipe dry using a clean, lint-free cloth to remove all residue. Keep wiping until the surface is completely dry. Note: Any remaining residue may result in contaminating the coatings to be applied following this step.
10. Mix and apply "to hiding" Ford Approved Argent color basecoat material following the manufacturers label recommendations and flash time.
11. Mix and apply Ford Approved Clearcoat. Let flash, booth purge, and bake at 140°F (60°C) panel temperature per following manufacturers recommended baking time.
12. Demask the part and reinstall the bumper.
