Removal and Installation
ColumnRemoval
NOTE: All steering column components are assembled with specific fasteners. They are designed with a thread-locking system to prevent loosening due to vibrations associated with normal vehicle operation.
All vehicles
1. Make sure the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable(s) and wait at least one minute to allow the depletion of the restraint system backup power supply.
All except commercial chassis
3. WARNING: To avoid the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) deactivation procedure.
Deactivate the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) if equipped.
All vehicles
4. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the clockspring removal and installation procedure.
Remove the clockspring.
Commercial chassis
5. Remove the nuts.
6. Remove the nuts and the steering column support.
All vehicles
7. Remove the screw and detach the transmission range indicator from the column.
8. Disconnect the transmission shift cable loop from the shift tube hook.
9. Remove the two retaining screws and two electrical connectors from the switch. Remove the multi-function switch from the steering column.
Commercial chassis
10. Remove the pinch bolt and detach the intermediate shaft from the steering column.
All except commercial chassis
11. Remove the pinch bolt and detach the intermediate shaft from the steering column.
All vehicles
12. Disconnect the shift cable from the selector lever pivot arm.
13. Remove the shift cable from the steering column lower mounting bracelet by pushing the tab on the cable in and sliding the cable off the bracket.
14. Disconnect the ignition switch.
15. Lower the steering column bend bracket and disconnect the plastic electrical connectors.
Commercial chassis
16. While supporting the steering column, remove the retaining nuts.
All except commercial chassis
17. While supporting the steering column, remove the retaining nuts.
All vehicles
18. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
Installation
Commercial chassis
1. Support the steering column and install the nuts.
2. Attach the intermediate shaft to the steering column and install the bolt.
All except commercial chassis
3. Support the steering column and install the nuts.
4. Attach the intermediate shaft to the steering column and install the bolt.
All vehicles
5. Slide the shift cable into position on the steering column lower mounting bracket, then secure with the retaining tab on the shift cable.
6. Snap the shift cable onto the shift selector pivot arm.
7. Connect the two electrical connectors of the multi-function switch. Position the multi-function switch and install the two retaining screws.
8. Snap the wire connector bracket onto the bend bracket, and connect all electrical connectors.
9. Attach the transmission shift cable loop on the shift selector hook, position the transmission shift cable bucket on the steering actuator housing and install the retaining screw.
10. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the clockspring removal and installation procedure.
Install the clockspring.
Commercial chassis
11. Position the steering column support and install the nuts.
12. Install the nuts.
13. Connect the battery ground cable(s).
All except commercial chassis
14. WARNING: To avoid the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) deactivation procedure.
Deactivate the Supplemental Restraint (SRS) system if equipped.
