Deactivation Procedures

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

WARNING:
^ TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS AND BEFORE SERVICING, REPLACING ADJUSTING OR STRIKING COMPONENTS NEAR THE FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS, SUCH AS DOORS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CONSOLE, DOOR LATCHES, STRIKERS, SEATS AND HOOD LATCHES.
^ PLEASE REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE COMPONENT OR SYSTEM TO DETERMINE LOCATION OF THE FRONT AIR BAG SENSORS.
^ THE SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS ARE LOCATED AT OR NEAR THE BASE OF THE B-PILLAR.
^ TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF EQUIPPED).
^ THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TOOL IS FOR RESTRAINT SYSTEM SERVICE ONLY. REMOVE FROM VEHICLE PRIOR TO ROAD USE. FAILURE TO REMOVE COULD RESULT IN INJURY AND POSSIBLE VIOLATION OF VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS.








2. Wait at least one minute for the backup power supply in the Restraints Control Module (RCM) to deplete its stored energy.







3. Remove the steering wheel access panel.







4. Disconnect the driver air bag from the air bag sliding contact.







5. Install a front restraint system diagnostic tool on the air bag sliding contact connector.







6. Access the passenger air bag electrical connector.
1 Push in the sides of the glove box to release the stop bumpers.
2 Swing the glove box out of the instrument panel.

7. Disconnect the passenger air bag electrical connector.

NOTE: The passenger air bag electrical connector is attached to the instrument panel steel reinforcement.







8. Attach a front restraint system diagnostic tool to the harness side of the passenger air bag connector.







9. Disconnect the driver side air bag module at the connector beneath the driver's seat.
10. Attach a side restraint system diagnostic tool to the harness side of the driver side air bag connector.
11. Repeat Steps 9 and 10 for the passenger side air bag connector.
12. Access the driver side safety belt retractor.
13. Disconnect the safety belt pretensioner electrical connector.
14. Connect a front restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness connector.
15. Repeat the previous three steps for the passenger side.
16. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
