Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

NOTE: The FEM and the instrument cluster must be reconfigured upon replacement. Refer to Module Communications Network (Information Bus).

1. Verify the customer concern by operating the daytime running lamps following these steps:
1 Place the ignition switch in the ON position.
2 Place the autolamp switch in the OFF position.
3 Place the headlamps in the ON position.
4 Verify the low beam operation.

NOTE: For headlamp concerns, refer to Lighting and Horns.

5 Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
6 Verify the DRL operation.
7 With the brakes applied, place the transaxle in Neutral.
2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.

3. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester to the Data Link Connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the NGS Tester menu. If the NGS Tester does not communicate with the vehicle:
^ check that the program card is correctly installed.
^ check the connections to the vehicle.
^ check the ignition switch position.
4. If the NGS Tester still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the New Generation STAR Tester manual.
5. Carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST. If the NGS Tester responds with:
^ CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, refer to Module Communications Network (Information Bus).
^ NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for FEM, go to Pinpoint Test A. Test A: No Communication With the Front Electronics Module
^ NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for IC, go to Pinpoint Test B. Test B: No Communication With the Instrument Cluster (IC)
^ SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out self-test diagnostics for the FEM.
6. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to FEM Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics. FEM Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index
